Get SMART about it!
We set goals and deadlines at the office, right? Why not the same with our health and fitness?
Wanting to lose weight and get fitter sounds great as New year’s resolutions! How many people actually end up following through?
The problem is that we fail to set goals that are SMART in nature. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time Bound.
Its that simple! Set a goal that meets the SMART criteria and you’re already halfway to achieving it!
The first time I meet a client I make it a point to ask them what their goal is. Losing weight or getting fitter is a great place to start but unless we define the goal in a SMART manner, achieving it is going to be a challenge!
Being motivated enough to set up an appointment with me is absolutely fantastic! It can be tough to ask for help. I want to take that motivation and energy and define it, turn it into a reality. Why? Because motivation fades. Discipline doesn’t. And having a goal to work towards, keeps you on your toes.
I actively work with my clients on phrasing their goals. Losing weight may become: I want to lose 5kg in the next 2 months. Getting fitter may become: I want to cut my half marathon time by 10 minutes in the next three months. Once you have a sharp focused goal to aim your energy towards, life just becomes a lot simpler!
So, the next time you find yourself failing at a target you’ve set for yourself, maybe get SMART about it!
